November 18, 2012

Hi Everyone! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I do miss you all and miss having such wonderful Thanksgiving celebrations and food. I will miss Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing, rolls, pumpkin pie and being with family and being able to text or visit with friends. Obviously, we do not celebrate Thanksgiving in Costa Rica. However, our cook said that he would try to come up with something special for me to eat to celebrate another American holiday. Most likely it will consist of rice and beans. (Actually, I am getting used to them). They do not celebrate Halloween in Costa Rica either - they think it is too evil. They are really really big on Christmas - and right now everyone is getting into decorating for Christmas. There is a lady whose house has so many Christmas decorations. I have included a picture of some of the things she has hanging on her walls and hanging from the ceiling of her house. It is insane. The main religion - being Catholic - everyone loves Christmas!!!!! I want everyone to know that I am so grateful to have all of you in my life. I appreciate your love and support and prayers.

Things are going well here. It is still the rainy season - every day!!! I like it. My Spanish is still coming along. People keep saying they are surprised by how much I talk. My companion says that I never stop talking. Haha! You will all probably agree. I even say the word "like" even in Spanish as a filler word. I can just picture my dad rolling his eyes saying "like, like, like, like". I can understand everyone pretty well for the most part. I can speak Spanish to get my main message across. Still have a lot that I need to learn but I have made a lot of progress. One day, we were swinging in the park waiting for the "Elders" to show up to go contacting with us. A little boy sat next to me on the swing and we started talking. He said, "you sound funny". haha. He said that he couldn't understand my accent. My companion turned to him and said, "then how is it you are answering every one of her questions. haha It was pretty funny and he was such a cute kid!
I am enjoying my ward and my area. Everyone is so supportive. Our bishop is the age of Tyson, the second counselor is the age of Landon and the first counselor is the age of dad - weird huh! They are really helpful. We even had an ex sister missionary come with us to teach. She served her mission in Nicaragua and knew my friend Allie Engman's brother who just returned from serving his mission there.
I am trying to eat better - the bread here could be the death of me! It is such a temptation every day. It is so soft and different than the bread in the States. Pizza tastes pretty much the same. Hamburgers are so so not like the United States. Would love an "In and Out Burger". I am trying to stay away from most of these foods - I do have pizza on occasion. We do normally have cereal for breakfast and dinner and have rice and beans and some type of meat for lunch. Don't like the soups here very much.

Funny story! So...one day, my companion forgot the keys in our house. We were locked in between our gate and the front door unable to leave. We don't have phones and don't have copies of the keys. Our neighbors were all at work so we couldn't really call out to anyone. I tried to climb over our gate in a skirt... but it didn't work. haha. Thankfully, a young teenager walked by and grabbed his mom. His mom then went and got a neighbor to help us. They used a ladder to climb over the gate, took our window off, climbed in and opened the door. haha. Yeah, we are going to make copies of the keys today in San Jose. It was so funny! We could not stop laughing the whole day. Now, I constantly ask my companion if she has the keys. It's now a joke between us. Crazy - funny - two young sister missionaries locked in between a gate and door yelling for help. It was great!!!!

People we are teaching:
One couple - the husband is not ready - he smokes marijuana etc. - his wife loves hearing our teachings and message, but we really try to do what we can to respect the family and other peoples beliefs.
Another couple - the wife really is ready to be baptized. We taught her about the Word of Wisdom. She drinks coffee, but doesn't want to. She keeps saying that everything we teach about families etc. is so true. We had her read about children being baptized because she has two little girls. She felt that it was wrong to baptize babies. We taught her that young children are pure - and do not know right from wrong. They do not need baptism. That is why we wait until the age of 8 years old for baptism. Her husband asks us so many questions and gets us mixed up with the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Another investigator - we taught her about Priesthood authority. We just explained that Christ taught His gospel when He was on the earth - Christ and his apostles had or held the Priesthood authority - or authority to act for God. When Christ died and eventually His apostles were killed - people became wicked and it fell into the Dark Ages - Christ's teachings were taken from the earth or teachings were lost, the priesthood authority to act for God (healing the sick, raising the dead, administering the sacrament - temple covenants) and Christ's church were taken from the earth. Then we talked about the restoration of Christ's church and how it was brought back upon the earth. She is so excited about what we have shared. Again, her husband is not interested in religion. So right now, we have many women interested - but the husbands are not ready.
There are new families that we just started to teach - we will see what happens.
We have one new convert - he loved the temple and desired to go there and be married there some day, but he is struggling because he does not have family support - his mother is in the hospital and his father does not like our church. Most people here are Catholic - but do not attend church or understand what their church teaches. It is just a way of life - We pray for him during these challenges.
Oh, I cut my hair! It is a bit short - I am trying to figure how to work with it - I wasn't expecting it to be sooooo short. Oh, well - it will grow out!
We get to attend the temple -  they will have translators for me! and we are also having our zone conference - being able to listen to our Mission President give us instruction and council - It will be great.
We are also working with some of the other sister missionaries who are not able to enter homes. We have really had great success at being able to meet people to teach and share our message. I am really enjoying my mission and very happy. I hear that you have snow. Weird to not have it in Costa Rica. Everything here is so green and beautiful and gorgeous. Also, still teaching English to children and adults - they are pretty good at - "Hello, how are you"! haha. Love to you all - and I am truly grateful for the blessing of wonderful family and friends and the opportunity to serve and love the people here in Costa Rica! Love, Hermana Jones
